An aged care assessment is how the government works out what support someone is eligible for. It's arranged through My Aged Care. Since December 2024, assessments have been done under the Single Assessment System, which replaced ACAT and RAS assessments. On the day, lots of people play down how much help they need. It's natural. Nobody wants to admit things are getting harder. But the assessment is what your support is based on, so it needs to reflect real life, not a good day.

Aged care assessment questions
What replaced ACAT assessments?
ACAT (Aged Care Assessment Team) and RAS (Regional Assessment Service) assessments were replaced by the Single Assessment System on 9 December 2024. Lots of people still say “ACAT”, and that's fine. You still apply through My Aged Care, and the assessment covers much the same ground.
How long does an aged care assessment take?
The visit itself usually takes an hour or two. Waiting times for an assessment, and for the outcome letter, vary, so it's worth applying as early as you can.
How do I get an aged care assessment?
You apply through My Aged Care, online or by phone. A GP or hospital can also refer you. We can help you work out the best way to start.
Can family be there for the assessment?
Yes, and it usually helps. A family member can fill in details the person being assessed might leave out.
What happens after the assessment?
You'll get a letter explaining what you've been approved for. The letters can be hard to follow, so we'll go through yours with you and map out the next step.
